I am going to let you in on a little secret... if you want to instantly become the coolest art teacher/mom/artsy-friend around, include stickers in your art making sessions. Every time I include them in a project the kids go nuts. I think the only thing that could top the sticker phenomenon is a chocolate fountain. Stickers + chocolate fountains = the stuff kid dreams are made of.

Materials:
alphabet craft stickers in assorted sizes. (The ones we used were purchased at Michael's I wasn't able to find them online)
watercolor palette + water + brush
thick white paper (we love this one, or this one, or this one)

We started by decorating our letters with oil pastels. I left the stickers on the sheet because it protected the sticky backing and it is a nice, slick, watercolor resistant surface. If you are working with a group of kiddos I would leave the stickers on the backing but cut the letters off the big sheet into individual squares.
You know how oil and water don't mix? Well, the principal applies when you combine oil pastel and watercolor. The watercolor goes around the pastel marks, leaving you with a vibrant design and washy background.

It's also fun to mix up the sizes of your letters. We started with a big A and finished with a big Z!
